Flinders Grown Garlic. Organically Loved & Handcrafted.
A micro business owned by a Flinders Island family.
We take great pride in the planting, growing and harvesting of our two varieties- Tasmanian Purple & Spanish Creole.
Our Garlic Journey
Our garlic journey has been a natural culmination of our passions and skills; understanding soil biology, respecting the garlic as a natural superfood, the desire to want to grow and create, and being on the land.
Watching the process of how a single clove grows into an edible, healthy bulb has been quite rewarding! Beginning with a handful of cloves not that long ago, we now have a crop of 8,000.
Every bulb is handcrafted; the planting, mulching, weeding, harvesting, storing and processing. The only part of the process that is not done with our hands, is the rotary hoeing at the beginning of every season. We use a little tractor power for that!
For the past few years, we have been selling our garlic within our community with excellent feedback. We have also been selling online for seed, culinary and to use as black garlic. We are now excited to have enough garlic to share and sell through a website.
Please enjoy looking through our photos and most importantly, we hope you enjoy our garlic; Flinders Island grown, harvested and loved!
Our Family Journey
We are Amanda, Shannon and Sonny, and we are generational Flinders Islanders. I am a Blyth, whose heritage stems back to Robert and Arthur Blyth, who arrived on the Sisters Islands in 1884 and began farming. We grow our garlic at my father’s property; a piece of land that holds a lot of connection for us.
Shannon is a Barrett, with Green, Wheatley and Ross heritage. His family is also loaded with island history, including his Great Great Great Uncle Thomas Barrett, who started the Furneaux Island’s first post office at Long Island, off Cape Barren. Shannon is also a descendent of Mannalargenna, which is something held dear.
This makes Sonny a sixth generational islander on my side, and a ninth generational islander on Shannon’s side. Sonny helps with everything garlic, and his childhood Easter festivities have now been replaced with planting thousands of garlic bulbs!
We live a wonderful life on Flinders. When we are not tending to our animals and garlic, Shannon operates a slashing business and does contract tractor work. In our down time, we are at the beach and exploring the bush.
We love our island for everything that it is and quite passionate about what makes it unique and irreplaceable.
